Premature Beats

Premature beats can originate in the upper chamber (Premature atrial contractions “PACs”) or lower chamber (Premature ventricular contractions “PVCs”) of the heart. Premature beats can occur at any age.

The Causes of Premature Beats

The causes of premature beats are quite varied and as such, there are not always clear triggers. Congenital heart issues remain a common cause of any cardiac arrhythmia including premature beats. However, environmental and lifestyle factors can play a big role in the incidence and severity. Some environmental and modifiable causes of premature beats include tobacco use, excessive caffeine intake, alcohol use, drug use, high blood pressure, anxiety and in some cases, exercise.

Symptoms of Premature Beats

Premature bests often cause minor sensations or discomfort in the chest. Some patients experience no symptoms at all. The most common complaints regarding premature beats include a fluttering sensation in the chest, the feeling of missing a heartbeat and strong or pounding heartbeats.

Treatment for Premature Beats

Treatment depends on associated symptoms, effects of the rhythm on the overall heart condition and risk for progression to severe arrhythmias. Patients are often prescribed medications, but cardiac catheter ablation has shown great success and helps avoid long term medication needs.
